Brrr! It's cold!
I said as I followed her through fields and forest.
- Daddy, if you want to be warm, it's your responsibility to bring a sweatshirt.
Magdelana, you little pipsqueak...I just gave MINE to YOU five minutes ago!
Twinkling eyes.
- I know.
____
YOU'RE RIGHT, I AM A HORRIBLE PERSON, AND IT'S A DANGEROUS GAME.
We have a mini-basketball hoop in the house now. I love it, because I get to make deals with the kids, like: If I make this shot, then we'll go to Disneyland this weekend! I shoot.
OH NO, I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED IT!
Okay, if I make THIS one, then we'll have ice cream for breakfast.
I shoot.
OH MAN, WHAT IS GOING ON, I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED TWO IN A ROW! -
Daddy, you are doing very horrible. My daughter says.
Okay, this one is definitely going in, I say, as I prepare to brick another one.
If I make THIS one, we'll go to Disney World on Friday.
I shoot, badly, but almost not badly enough, and my stress level rockets in a nanosecond as it catches the top corner of the backboard, ricochets off the wall, and then comes frighteningly close to actually going through the hoop as it grazes the rim and then drops to the ground.
So, I narrowly avoid catastrophe and the kids sigh with disappointment. You are so bad at this Daddy.
I know, I say. And smile with relief. It's a dangerous game.
